Hotel Galini, Chersonisos, Crete, Greece

My husband and I have just returned from a week’s holiday on an all inclusive basis at the family run Hotel Galini, Chersonisos, Crete.

Anybody who pays the prices charged by this hotel and thinks they are going to a 5* hotel is deluded and should use a travel agent instead of booking themselves on line. It is an inexpensive family-run hotel about half a mile from the sea and about 2 miles from Chersonisos.

We arrived late in the evening and were tired. The security guard, Chris checked us in: he gave us the key to our room & the remote control for the tv, although we only got one channel! . He was delightful, the room was less so. The room was small. It contained a 3/4 bed and a single bed, a balcony with a table and 2 chairs and an en-suite shower room. There was only a top sheet for the larger bed and the blankets in the wardrobe were very smelly. We asked for these to be replaced with clean ones the following morning and this happened within about 30 minutes. The en-suite shower room, like all I have seen in Crete, have a bucket for the toilet paper. There was no other waste bin in the room. The shower tray was small and badly cracked around the edges. There was nowhere to hang the shower head so we had to hold it when having a shower. However, in general the room was clean but tired very basic.

roomI went straight to bed but when my husband walked down to the pool bar he found it was largely occupied by staff. He joined them for a couple of beers. He found them very friendly and they shared their food with him. The staff do what they can for the guests.

Breakfast is a continental buffet which varies little day in day out. The bread is delicious, the breakfast cake traditional but the beans look revolting and I do not understand why wine is available on tap this early in the morning! Meals on the whole offered little choice. The selection of food is poor, repetitive and luke warm rather than hot. However the salad vegetables and fruit is very fresh and plentiful. Dessert was almost always fruit at lunch time and dinner, which I enjoyed, but some variety would have been appreciated. For some obscure reason no smacks were available during the day, except for ice cream between 2-4 pm. However, although I am vegetarian, there was always something suitable for even me each meal and my husband had choices of meat and fish dishes. He enjoyed most of these and neither of us ever went hungry.

Our room was attended to by chamber maids every day. The linen and towels were changed 4 times in 7 nights. However, the replacements were well worn. Several of the sheets had holes in them or were ripped. Most of the bath mats were well past their. The floor of the room was mopped twice. Hygiene standards are not very high.

The hotel has no lift and has stairs all over the place. It is does not sell anything other than crisps at the bar & postcards in reception and the nearest shop is 500 yards up a dirt track so this hotel is not suitable for those with disabilities or for children in prams or buggies.

There is a tiny kiddies pool. The main pool varies in depth from 1.40 metres to 3.20 metres so it was never warm. Much of the pool and bar furniture was tired and worn.

poolThe staff in the hotel are helpful and do their best. The hotel is in definite need of attention both in its fabric and the service it offers if it is to meet the needs of Western tourists going forward. However, we met some delightful people during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. So, would I choose to go back to Hotel Galini by choice? No. Would I have a hissy fit if someone took me on a surprise holiday and I ended up there? Also no. Would I recommend Hotel Galini? That is a definite no.
