Brigade, 139 Tooley St, London, England

On a recent visit to London, England, my husband and I discovered Brigade. Our daughters and son-in-law joined us for dinner. Brigade is a very special restaurant. It serves tasty modern European bistro cuisine in a former fire station with exposed brickwork and an open kitchen. However, what makes it trule special is that it is based at the historic Fire Station on Tooley Street, close to London Bridge Station. Brigade Barbrigade-075-1024x445 & Bistro is also a unique social enterprise with an appetite for distinctive food and individual service led by Chef Founder Simon Boyle. At Brigade, outstanding food does more than just provide pleasure. Together with Beyond Food, Brigade offers vulnerable and homeless people catering apprenticeships, giving them the opportunity for a brighter future. We were delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile endeavour.

The dining area is large and bright and you can see over to the kitchen where the food s prepared. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Although they had only a limited choice of beers and no slimline tonic, we were pleased with our meals.

We started with a selection of breads, olives & nuts and then for main course my daughters and I had vegetable pasta whil my husband and son-in-law had fish and Brigade-braschips. The meals offered plentiful portions and were nicely served. The boys stuck to beer, while the girls and I shared a bottle of pinot grigio. The wine was nicely chilled and properly served.

The food at Brigade, consisted of  simple, ingredients, that, we were told were sourced as locally as possible from farmers and suppliers known and trusted. The service was friendly but professional and, apparently all the service staff learn to cook and so can give knowledgeable recommendations and advice on dishes.

It was clear to me that every part of Brigade is about the food and the people who need a break. If we are honest, we all need a break sometimes. Together with Beyond Food, they offer vulnerable people catering apprenticeships. This gives them tools for a better future. At Brigade, we enjoyed our evening: the food, the service and the ambience. However, the evening did more than just provide pleasure, it also felt good to support an enterprise that creates opportunities.

I highly recommend Brigade and look forward to going back again.

Azzuro, 35 Tooley Street, London, SE1 2QJ, England

Azzuro is an Italian restaurant near London Bridge Station in London, England is on the main road and is easy to azzurrafind. Azzurro  is located on Tooley Street, opposite the entrance to the London Dungeon. It is a modern restaurant is open from midday until late seven days a week, serving top quality, freshly prepared, great value, Italian food. The downstairs bar comes to life in the evening and has a daily happy hour in the bar between 5pm and 8pm. It is a veritable tardis.  Azzuro looks tiny from the street, but it seems quite roomy when you get inside. My husband and I joined our daughter and son-in-law for dinner there when we were visiting the big smoke recently. It is always good to see them.

The restaurant was warm and the tables are not too close together.  Also, the restaurant was not too noisy. We could have a conversation. However, it was busy and I would recommend booking a table. The lavatories are downstairs where there was a bar with music and lots of atmosphere. There are also stairs to get to different parts of the restaurant, so I would not recommend Azzuro to those with physical disabilities or mobility problems.

restaurantImgThe staff in the restaurant were very polite and efficient and the menu is large and varied. Drinks arrived quickly and we did not have to wait too long for our meals. We started with a selection of black and green olives and breads to share. They really were delicious and the breads included onion bread, tomato bread, garlic bread and whole grain varieties too.  My husband is not that fond of olives, so he chose the bean soup. It was very thick and hearty with a wide variety of vegetables and beans in it. He really did enjoy it.

Our main courses were all different. My daughter chose a pasta dish, while my son-in-law had a pizza. They had had busy days at work and I was glad to see them both tucking into their dinner. My husband chose a steak. He was mapLondonBridge2delighted because it was cooked exactly the way he likes it and it was very tender. I was not so keen on my vegetarian rissotto. It sounded much more interesting than it was. Even black pepper and parmesan cheese could not save it. Still, three out of four ain’t bad!

We finished up with a selection of teas and coffees. There is a wide variety of tea and the coffee is a delicious blend. The restaurant offers good food, a friendly ambiance and excellent value for money. I would certainly visit Azzurro again, but I will not have the vegetarian risotto.

We enjoyed breakfast, although the usual dining room was being refurbished, the full usual Hilton hot and cold buffet was available. Service, as would be expected at the Hilton, was discrete and efficient. However, it was not friendly. We also experienced the fashionable destination bar TwoRuba for a drink before dinner. It is a perfect place to unwind with a vibrant atmosphere and polished service. I was not surprised to learn that this London landmark hotel has received a number of prominent Hilton service awards, including the coveted Brand of Excellence award.hilton bar
